What is a Tummy Tuck Procedure?

You may consider getting a tummy tuck procedure (abdominoplasty) if you complain about the excess skin in your abdomen that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. This surgery flattens the abdomen and makes it tighter by removing the extra fat and skin.

Do You Need to Get a Tummy Tuck Surgery?

A tummy tuck surgery is suitable for people who are in a good health condition overall and unhappy with the excess skin throughout the abdominal area. Overweight patients wouldn’t make an eligible candidate for the tummy tuck operation since you need to be at a stable weight that you can maintain after the surgery. Although many patients do lose some weight after the procedure, losing too much can leave more excess skin around your stomach which negates the results of the procedure. Tummy Tuck is a surgery that is recommended for those who are not interested in becoming pregnant again. Therefore, if you aren’t finished with having children, it is better to wait until you have no more plans of getting pregnant.  Future pregnancies can separate muscles again and re-stretch the skin around the belly which means you may need to get another tummy tuck operation in the future. If you are a smoker, keep in mind that you are not allowed to smoke for at least several weeks before and after the surgery.

In short, you may consider yourself a good candidate for tummy tuck surgery if you have lost a significant amount of weight which caused excess skin around your belly and the sagging skin is elastic. You should postpone the surgery if you are still planning to lose a significant amount of weight until you achieve your goal.

You should have realistic expectations from the surgery. Will the tummy tuck operation create a magnificent result? As long as you are in good hands and have patience, yes. A tummy tuck will make a remarkable impact on your appearance and self-confidence. But the ultimate recovery won’t happen in the blinking of an eye and you will have to face some difficulties like permanent postoperative scars. If you are willing to maintain the results of a tummy tuck with a healthy lifestyle by eating healthy and having an exercise routine, you should go for it.

Many patients are not sure if they should undergo a tummy tuck or liposuction operation. The important thing to know is that liposuction is about removing the excess fat, not the sagging skin necessarily and for this reason, it doesn’t tighten the skin as much as tummy tuck does. As with the mommy makeover procedure, liposuction and tummy tuck can be performed together on the patients, if it’s required.
